Professor Esther Mwaikambo is a senior paediatrician from Tanzania whose career has spanned education, scientific research, administration and management in the field of medicine and health sciences. Previous to her current post, she was Head of Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at Muhimbili University (1990-1998) and Vice Chancellor of the Herbert Kairuki Memorial University (1999-2007).

The Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5 were agreed in 2000 and relate to reducing child mortality and improving maternal health.
